Frequently asked
Do I need any experience?
No. Many of our students have never held a firearm. Instructors start with the basics and coach you one-on-one on the range.
What does the $175 class fee include?
LTC classroom instruction, range time and marksmanship, the self-defense session and the gun store segment. The Texas DPS License to Carry application fee is paid separately by each student when you apply with the state.
Do I need to bring my own handgun?
Not necessarily. If you don't own one yet, let us know when you register and we'll talk through options before class. We email a full packing list to every registered student.
Will I be able to apply for my Texas LTC after class?
The class covers the Texas LTC classroom and range proficiency requirements. To apply with Texas DPS you must meet the state's eligibility rules — generally age 21, or 18 with qualifying military service. Check your eligibility with DPS before you register if you're unsure.
Where is the class held?
Classes are held in the Whitesboro, Texas area. For everyone's safety, exact addresses are emailed only to registered students.
Can I get a refund or change my date?
Yes, within our cancellation policy. See the Refund & Cancellation Policy for details.
I'm a domestic violence survivor. Can I attend for free?
We sponsor free seats for survivors as funding allows, and we host free classes with women's shelters. Contact us privately — you don't need to share details you're not comfortable sharing.
Is my registration private?
Yes. We never publish or share our student list. Read our Privacy Policy and our tips for staying safe online.
Is my class fee or donation tax-deductible?
Class fees pay for a service you receive, so they are not a charitable donation. We are seeking 501(c)(3) status; once the IRS recognizes Gatewatch, donations made after our formation date may qualify. Please consult your tax advisor.
I have a disability. Can I take part?
We want every woman to be able to train with us. Use the accommodations box when you register, or contact us, and we'll work with our instructors and venues to make it work for you.
Nonprofit status: Gatewatch is a charitable organization based in Texas. We are seeking IRS recognition as a 501(c)(3) public charity. Until it is approved, we cannot guarantee that donations are tax-deductible.
